Kib: Chapter 1.
By the light of the fire they danced. The two, a mother and her daughter, worked in perfect tandem, each one playing off the movements of the other. The refracted light from their quickly moving charms and beads shone brightly in the eyes of their only onlooker. Cloaked by the shadows, Kib, a young sand-elf, watched them with a longing in his heart.
The sand-elves were a purely matriarchal society, due entirely to the favor of their patron diety, Tah-Len, the fierce one, who only shed her divinity on the females of their kind. However impossible a hope, as Kib watched them, he wished internally that he could one day learn the art of spell-dancing.
He marveled at the colored lights that rose from the sand whenever their feet hit it. He studied their movements with a calculating eye. Although he knew it was forbidden, Kib couldn't help but watch his mother and older sister as they prayed to Tah-Len for prosperity and guidence. Suddenly, the flames turned blue and both dancers stopped as fluidly as they had started. Kib quickly ran to the back of the house and climbed to the roof of their small Assieuence.
An Assieuence was what the sand elves called their dwellings. They resembled cottages, except they had vents cut into the walls just below the ceiling, making them look somewhat like bunkers. The relatively small homes generally had several domes that were connected by smooth sandstone corridors, in the event of a sandstorm.
Despite his mother's best efforts to deter him, Kib still enjoyed sitting on the roof at night, contemplating the stars. He'd only been there ten minutes when his mother called from below, "Kib! Get down here so I can tuck you in!"
As much as he protested to her pamperings, Kib secretly enjoyed them, after all, she was a high priestess and he was a 9 year old male, why shouldn't she help him out. Climbing down from his perch, Kib ran inside and quickly bathed himself and then, after dressing, bolted into his room to prepare for Reverie. It was on that night, the Vernal Equinox, that Kib had wished on a star that he would learn to spell-dance, and the God's looked into the future of this world, and sighed, before pushing time and space into the chaotic abyss of the future.
